Meet Kai En — The Opportunist of Zenpai Association

Meet Kai En — The Opportunist of Zenpai Association

Zenpai Association

Kai En has many talents.

He can slip through a locked door without making a sound.

He can negotiate a merchant down to a price they immediately regret agreeing to.

He can walk into a restricted area, convince everyone he belongs there, take what he came for, and leave before anyone realizes something is missing.

He is naturally gifted.

Charismatic.

Sharp.

Adaptable.

And unfortunately...

one of the cheapest men ever allowed inside Zenpai Association.

Not financially responsible.

Not frugal.

Not careful with money.

Just:

cheap.

There is an important difference.

Because somehow, despite fighting over every dollar he spends...

Kai is:

always broke anyway.

Kai En — The Opportunist

Name: Kai En
Title: The Opportunist
Alias: Kane, Silvie, Cheapo
Role: Infiltration & Procurement Specialist
Affiliation: Zenpai Association
Nature: Infiltration
Personality: Extroverted, messy, naturally talented, lazy, playful, shamelessly cheap
Symbolism: Luck, resourcefulness, adaptability, opportunity
Specialty: Stealth, haggling, lockpicking, persuasion, restricted access
Signature Equipment: Modular Infiltration Blade
Integrated Personal Tool: Lucky Lockpick
Primary Ability: Persuasion
Combat Specialty: Evasion, Disarming, Precision Strikes, Environmental Manipulation
Home: Zenpai Association
Known For: Bargaining over absolutely everything and somehow still having no money

A Natural Talent With Questionable Motivation

Kai has always been good at things he probably should have needed more practice to learn.

Locks made sense to him almost immediately.

Sneaking into places came naturally.

Reading people was easy.

Negotiation felt like a game.

And whenever a situation became uncomfortable, Kai had an almost supernatural ability to start talking and somehow make the problem disappear.

The frustrating part?

He rarely works as hard as everyone thinks he should.

Kai sleeps late.

Leaves things everywhere.

Forgets assignments until suspiciously close to the deadline.

And has perfected the phrase:

“I was just about to do that.”

Usually when he absolutely was not.

Yet somehow...

when things actually matter:

Kai delivers.

This has prevented Parra Loph from firing him approximately several hundred times.

The Opportunist

Kai earned the title:

The Opportunist

because he sees possibilities everywhere.

Most people see a locked door.

Kai sees:

another entrance.

Most people see an expensive item.

Kai sees:

an unfinished negotiation.

Most people see a guard.

Kai sees:

somebody who probably wants to hear an extremely convincing story.

Most people see an unattended collectible.

Kai sees...

an item temporarily lacking supervision.

Kai has been repeatedly instructed that this does not make the item free.

He disagrees philosophically.

“Borrowing”

Kai almost never uses the word:

stealing.

According to him, stealing sounds unnecessarily negative.

He prefers:

Borrowing.

Temporary acquisition.

Unscheduled procurement.

Emergency relocation.

Finding.

Rescuing.

Holding something until its owner eventually notices.

Vivienne Vale has banned him from inventing terminology for Archive reports.

Kai continues doing it anyway.

His favorite philosophy perfectly summarizes the problem:

“If no one is watching, then no one will notice...”

Whenever Kai says this, someone nearby usually responds:

“That is still stealing.”

Kai considers this a matter of opinion.

The Lucky Lockpick

Long before Kai carried specialized Zenpai Association equipment, he had one tool he trusted above almost everything else.

A small, old, visibly worn:

Lucky Lockpick.

The lockpick is rusty.

Simple.

Old-fashioned.

And completely unimpressive beside the advanced equipment used throughout Zenpai Association.

Kai does not care.

Nobody knows whether the Lucky Lockpick is actually lucky.

Kai certainly believes it is.

He claims the lockpick has:

Opened impossible doors.

Saved missions.

Found hidden treasure.

Helped him escape several situations he refuses to explain.

And once helped him get into a restaurant after closing because he:

“forgot his leftovers.”

Parra considers that final story evidence Kai should not be trusted with lockpicks.

Kai considers it evidence:

the lockpick works.

An Old Tool in a New Weapon

When Zenpai Association eventually began developing specialized combat equipment for Kai, there was one problem.

Kai refused to stop carrying the Lucky Lockpick.

The Association could build him something:

stronger,

faster,

more advanced,

and considerably more versatile.

Kai agreed.

But the lockpick stayed.

So instead of replacing it...

they built around it.

Kai’s original rusty Lucky Lockpick now sits inside a protected compartment built directly into the handle of his new weapon.

Not replicated.

Not redesigned.

Not polished.

The same rusty lockpick.

Still there.

Kai insists this improves the weapon.

Vivienne has repeatedly asked him to explain exactly how.

Kai usually answers:

“Luck.”

Vivienne:

“That is not a mechanism.”

Kai:

“Sounds like something unlucky people say.”

The Modular Infiltration Blade

Kai’s primary field weapon is now:

The Modular Infiltration Blade.

A compact Zenpai Association combat and infiltration tool built specifically around the way Kai operates.

It is not a large sword.

Not a heavy weapon.

Not something designed for prolonged frontline fighting.

The blade is:

sleek,

compact,

one-handed,

concealable,

and built around versatility.

Its black and silver construction is accented by:

red neon illumination.

The shape resembles a fusion between:

a tactical short blade,

a breaching tool,

an electronic bypass device,

and an oversized lockpick.

Which is appropriate.

Because Kai uses it as:

all four.

Why Kai Needed a Weapon

Kai’s philosophy has always been simple.

Why fight someone...

if you can:

avoid them,

distract them,

negotiate with them,

sneak around them,

or convince them they never saw you?

For a long time, this worked surprisingly well.

Then Zenpai Association’s missions became more dangerous.

Restricted facilities became:

armed facilities.

Locked doors became:

spiritual barriers.

Security systems became:

cross-world security systems.

And occasionally...

the person Kai was trying to avoid decided avoidance was no longer an option.

Kai still does not like unnecessary fights.

The Modular Infiltration Blade simply ensures that when somebody insists...

Kai has:

another option.

Not a Traditional Sword

Kai does not fight like a swordsman.

He does not stand still and exchange strikes.

He does not challenge opponents to honorable duels.

He does not care about proving who is stronger.

Kai fights like someone whose real objective is:

leaving.

The blade is therefore designed around:

speed

precision

disarming

mobility

escape

environmental interaction

creating openings

Kai attacks only when the attack gives him something.

Distance.

An exit.

A dropped weapon.

A distracted opponent.

A broken lock.

A disabled security device.

A path forward.

His goal is rarely:

defeat the enemy.

His goal is:

stop the enemy from stopping him.

The Blade

The cutting section of the Modular Infiltration Blade is narrow and angular.

Its geometry favors:

quick slashes

controlled thrusts

weapon trapping

precision cuts

mechanical access

cutting restraints

Sections of the blade contain specialized grooves and contact surfaces allowing Kai to interact with mechanisms that would be awkward for an ordinary weapon.

The unusual forked upper profile can be used for:

hooking,

catching,

lifting,

wedging,

and manipulating small mechanical components.

Kai claims it is:

“basically a lockpick that can stab people.”

Zenpai Association engineering has asked him to stop describing it that way.

Electronic Bypass

The Modular Infiltration Blade can interface with modern access systems.

Security panels.

Electronic locks.

Maintenance ports.

Restricted terminals.

Automated doors.

Certain forms of cross-world machinery.

Kai can connect the weapon directly to compatible systems and use it as an extension of his normal infiltration tools.

Sometimes this allows him to:

open a door.

Sometimes it allows him to:

disable a lock.

Sometimes it allows him to:

convince a security system that the door was never locked in the first place.

Kai prefers:

that option.

It feels more elegant.

Spiritual Bypass

Zenpai Association does not operate exclusively in places governed by ordinary technology.

Kai eventually encountered:

spiritual seals,

ritual barriers,

magically protected locks,

reconstructed security structures,

and doors where a normal lockpick was clearly not going to be enough.

The Modular Infiltration Blade was adapted accordingly.

The blade can channel controlled ZA energy through its red illuminated circuitry, allowing Kai to probe unusual barriers for:

weak points,

interruptions,

openings,

or structural inconsistencies.

He cannot simply unlock every supernatural barrier in existence.

Kai deeply wishes that were true.

But the blade gives him something he has always been very good at using:

a chance.

And Kai tends to do dangerous things with chances.

Breaching Tool

Sometimes subtlety fails.

Kai hates when this happens.

But he accepts it.

The reinforced blade can function as a compact:

breaching wedge.

Kai can force it between:

doors,

panels,

crates,

frames,

or damaged machinery.

The reinforced body allows leverage without requiring the weapon to function like a massive crowbar.

It is particularly useful when Kai needs:

just enough space

to reach something he was not supposed to reach.

Restraint Breaker

Kai has an unfortunate habit of occasionally ending up:

handcuffed,

tied,

locked in rooms,

or otherwise temporarily inconvenienced.

He refuses to discuss how frequently this occurs.

The Modular Infiltration Blade includes cutting and bypass surfaces designed for:

restraints

cables

binding materials

mechanical cuffs

certain locking devices

Parra has pointed out that ideally Kai should avoid being captured.

Kai agrees.

He simply likes:

contingency plans.

Parra stared at him for several seconds after hearing him voluntarily say the phrase:

contingency plan.

It was a strange day.

The Retractable Bypass Line

Built into the lower handle of the weapon is a compact spool containing:

Retractable Bypass Line.

A thin reinforced cable designed for infiltration and retrieval work.

Kai uses it for:

climbing

short-distance grappling

crossing gaps

retrieving small objects

creating trip lines

pulling equipment toward himself

lowering himself into restricted areas

escaping places he absolutely should not have entered

The cable is not intended to function as a massive grappling hook capable of carrying an entire team.

It is:

compact.

Quiet.

Practical.

And extremely useful.

Exactly the kind of tool Kai likes.

“Why Walk Over There?”

Kai once used the Bypass Line during a retrieval mission to pull a small secured object across a room toward himself.

Sienna watched the object slide directly into Kai’s hand.

She stared at him.

Then asked:

“You seriously couldn’t walk ten feet?”

Kai:

“Could.”

Sienna:

“Then why didn’t you?”

Kai looked at the cable.

Looked at the object.

Then looked back at Sienna.

“Why walk over there?”

Sienna had no immediate response.

Kai considered this a philosophical victory.

The Lucky Lockpick Compartment

The most personal component of the Modular Infiltration Blade is hidden inside its handle.

A narrow transparent housing protects Kai’s:

Lucky Lockpick.

The old lockpick sits visibly inside the modern weapon.

Rust and all.

Kai can remove it whenever he wants.

He still occasionally does.

Especially when facing an ordinary mechanical lock.

Someone once asked why he would use the rusty old lockpick when the weapon contains substantially more advanced access technology.

Kai responded:

“Because this one likes me.”

Nobody knew how to continue the conversation.

Old and New

The contrast between the two pieces of equipment says more about Kai than he probably realizes.

The Modular Infiltration Blade represents:

Zenpai Association.

Modern equipment.

New responsibilities.

A larger team.

More dangerous missions.

The Lucky Lockpick represents:

the person Kai was before any of that.

Independent.

Improvisational.

Operating with whatever he happened to have.

Kai keeps both.

Not because he is sentimental.

According to Kai.

But he has never allowed anyone to remove the lockpick from the blade permanently.

Also according to Kai:

“It fits there.”

Nobody believes that is the entire reason.

Persuasion

Despite carrying a specialized infiltration weapon...

Kai’s greatest ability still has nothing to do with the blade.

It is:

his mouth.

Kai can talk.

And talk.

And keep talking until somehow the conversation ends with him getting what he wanted.

He has convinced guards:

he was expected.

Merchants:

their prices were unreasonable.

Rivals:

fighting him would be inconvenient.

People who caught him somewhere restricted:

that they had actually misunderstood the situation.

And occasionally himself:

that buying something expensive was a good financial decision.

That final person is the only one he consistently fails to persuade responsibly.

Why Persuasion Comes First

Kai considers fighting:

expensive.

Weapons break.

Clothing gets damaged.

Medical treatment costs money.

Property damage creates questions.

And questions sometimes involve:

invoices.

Kai would therefore much rather convince an opponent that fighting is:

unnecessary,

inconvenient,

against their interests,

or somebody else’s problem entirely.

If persuasion works?

Great.

If persuasion fails?

Kai reaches for the Modular Infiltration Blade.

Then usually tries persuasion:

one more time.

The Art of Haggling

Kai treats a listed price as:

the beginning of a conversation.

Never the end.

If something costs $100...

Kai wants it for $60.

If the seller accepts $60 immediately...

Kai becomes suspicious that he could have gotten it for $45.

If they agree to $45...

he asks about free shipping.

If shipping is already free...

he wants something else included.

There is no victory condition.

The negotiation simply continues until the other person becomes exhausted.

Kai considers this:

a talent.

Everyone who has ever sold him something considers it:

psychological warfare.

Cheapo

Kai’s cheapest habits eventually earned him another alias.

Cheapo.

He hates paying:

full price,

cover charges,

delivery fees,

parking fees,

subscriptions.

He hates paying for water when water technically exists somewhere else for free.

If an event offers free samples...

Kai somehow returns multiple times wearing slightly different accessories.

Nobody knows where he gets the accessories.

Do not ask.

The Problem With Dating

Based purely on appearance...

Kai should have very little difficulty dating.

Silver hair.

Good looks.

Confident personality.

Easy conversation.

Natural charm.

And yet...

Kai is:

catastrophically bad with women.

Not because he is shy.

Not because he cannot flirt.

Not because he lacks confidence.

Because eventually...

the bill arrives.

Kai has taken women to restaurants and immediately produced coupons.

He has suggested splitting appetizers because:

“We’re both technically eating it.”

He once chose a restaurant entirely because children ate free and spent ten minutes trying to determine whether the promotion contained an exploitable age loophole.

There was not.

And yes...

Kai has absolutely convinced women to pay for his meal.

His argument is usually something like:

“You invited me emotionally.”

Nobody knows what that means.

“You’re Paying, Right?”

Kai has developed a reputation around Zenpai Association for asking one extremely dangerous question near the end of dates:

“You’re paying, right?”

Sometimes he asks jokingly.

Sometimes he is absolutely serious.

This has ruined what would otherwise have been several successful evenings.

Sienna Canyon once asked him how someone with his face could possibly be this bad at dating.

Kai responded:

“I have standards.”

Sienna:

“You tried to use a buy-one-get-one coupon on a date.”

Kai:

“Exactly. Efficient.”

Silvie

Among closer friends, Kai is sometimes called:

Silvie

because of his silver hair.

Kai tolerates this nickname significantly less than he pretends.

Sienna uses it whenever she wants something.

Parra occasionally uses it when annoyed.

Akai heard it once.

That was the end.

Akai now seems convinced Silvie is his actual name.

Kai has attempted to correct her.

Akai does not care.

The Kai / Akai Problem

The similarity between:

Kai

and

Akai

has created another recurring problem inside Zenpai Association.

Someone calls:

“Kai!”

Both sometimes look up.

Someone calls:

“Akai!”

Both occasionally respond.

Parra once became frustrated and yelled:

“A-KAI!”

Kai looked at her.

Akai looked at her.

Parra:

“The fox.”

Kai:

“You could’ve started with that.”

Parra’s expression suggested the Command Vox Axe was becoming relevant.

Kane

Kane

is the more natural shortening of Kai En.

Field teams use it.

Merchants remember it.

Several security departments probably have it written down somewhere.

Kai insists those records are unrelated to him.

The photographs reportedly disagree.

Somehow Always Broke

The strangest thing about Kai is that he is not cheap because he is saving money.

That would make sense.

Kai does not save money.

In fact, nobody knows where his money goes.

Including:

Kai.

He can negotiate an incredible deal.

Celebrate how much he saved.

Receive payment from an Association job.

And somehow be completely broke two days later.

Ask what happened to the money and he usually stares into the distance for several seconds before saying:

“...I bought something.”

What?

He does not remember.

Sometimes packages begin arriving later.

That helps.

Not always.

His Financial System

Kai’s budgeting philosophy appears to consist of:

Avoid spending money whenever possible.

Acquire money.

Immediately forget that budgeting was the reason he wanted money.

Purchase something inexplicable.

Lose track of remaining money.

Complain about prices.

Repeat.

Vivienne once offered to help him create financial records.

Kai disappeared.

Finding Zenpai Association

Kai first crossed paths with Zenpai Association during a procurement job.

The Association needed access to something difficult to acquire.

The asking price was unreasonable.

The location was inconvenient.

And the people controlling access were not interested in negotiating.

Kai solved all three problems.

By the time the Association met him properly, he had already:

entered the location,

negotiated the price down,

obtained the item,

and acquired two additional objects nobody had asked for.

Parra wanted to know:

how.

Vivienne wanted:

documentation.

Sienna wanted to know:

what else he found.

Akai wanted:

one of the objects.

Kai wanted:

reimbursement for lunch.

He joined not long afterward.

Infiltration & Procurement Specialist

Today, Kai works as Zenpai Association’s:

Infiltration & Procurement Specialist.

His assignments involve situations where being:

loud,

obvious,

or overly formal

would make everything harder.

He handles:

Stealth infiltration

Difficult acquisitions

Negotiations

Price haggling

Information gathering

Lockpicking

Restricted-area access

Trade deals

Discreet procurement

Cross-world infiltration

Security bypass

Covert retrieval

Talking his way out of whatever happens afterward

If Sienna Canyon is the person you send when a prize must be:

forcibly brought home...

Kai is the person you send when ideally:

nobody realizes Zenpai was there.

Night Operations

Kai is particularly effective during:

nighttime operations.

Lower traffic.

Reduced visibility.

Smaller patrol rotations.

More opportunities.

Kai naturally prefers environments where being unnoticed is easier.

Sienna dominates direct daytime retrieval work.

Kai thrives when the mission requires someone to:

slip inside,

find the target,

learn what is happening,

open the route,

and disappear again.

He is one of Zenpai Association’s most elusive field members.

Not because he is physically stronger than everyone else.

Because by the time somebody realizes Kai was present...

he is usually:

somewhere else.

Kai in Combat

Kai avoids direct combat whenever possible.

That does not mean he cannot fight.

When forced into close quarters, Kai uses the Modular Infiltration Blade with the same philosophy he applies to everything else:

do only what is necessary.

No wasted movement.

No long exchanges.

No standing around proving anything.

He attacks:

hands,

weapons,

balance,

equipment,

escape routes,

and environmental weaknesses.

He may disarm someone instead of injuring them.

Cut a cable instead of attacking the person guarding it.

Disable the lights.

Lock a door.

Break a restraint.

Create an opening.

Then leave.

Kai does not need the final strike.

He needs:

the exit.

Environmental Manipulation

Kai is particularly dangerous in complicated environments.

Warehouses.

Cities.

Offices.

Industrial facilities.

Archives.

Markets.

Ships.

Large buildings.

Places filled with:

doors,

stairs,

corners,

locks,

equipment,

vents,

elevators,

maintenance passages,

and objects nobody else considers useful.

Kai notices all of it.

During a fight, he may:

turn off the lights,

lock someone behind a security door,

open an emergency exit,

drop a barrier,

cut power,

redirect an elevator,

use the Bypass Line to cross a gap,

or simply leave through an entrance nobody knew existed.

This is why Parra considers Kai simultaneously:

extremely useful

and

profoundly irritating.

Lazy Does Not Mean Incompetent

Kai’s messy habits often make people underestimate him.

That is usually:

a mistake.

When he actually focuses...

Kai is frighteningly capable.

He reads rooms quickly.

Notices escape routes.

Understands what people want.

Recognizes when someone is bluffing.

Tracks movement.

Identifies opportunities.

And adapts almost instantly when a plan fails.

That natural talent is arguably his greatest strength.

It is also the reason he gets away with being:

so lazy.

Everyone knows how good Kai could be if he applied himself consistently.

Kai knows too.

He simply sees no reason to do extra work when the minimum amount keeps succeeding.

Kai & Sienna Canyon

Kai and Sienna get along:

dangerously well.

Both enjoy risk.

Both like prizes.

Both have flexible interpretations of how plans should work.

The biggest difference?

Sienna loves winning.

Kai loves winning:

for less money than everyone else.

Sienna will spend whatever a mission requires.

Kai experiences emotional pain watching her do this.

He has repeatedly tried to negotiate her mission expenses.

She has repeatedly threatened to throw him into the Prize Box.

Their friendship remains strong.

The Brawler & The Opportunist

Sienna and Kai also represent two completely different solutions to the same problem.

A locked route.

Sienna:

breaks through it.

Kai:

opens it.

A guarded objective.

Sienna:

defeats the guard.

Kai:

convinces the guard to leave.

A dangerous retrieval.

Sienna:

carries the prize home.

Kai:

makes sure nobody noticed it leaving.

When forced to work together...

they are disturbingly effective.

Kai finds the opening.

Sienna exploits it.

Sienna handles the confrontation.

Kai handles everything behind it.

Parra does not enjoy assigning them together.

Too much:

improvisation.

The Modular Infiltration Blade & Sienna

Sienna immediately approved of Kai finally receiving a real combat weapon.

Then she saw it.

She stared at the compact blade.

Looked at Kai.

Then asked:

“That’s it?”

Kai:

“What?”

Sienna:

“I expected something bigger.”

Kai:

“Why?”

Sienna pointed toward her gauntlets and boots.

Kai:

“Exactly. You already spent enough money for both of us.”

Sienna nearly hit him.

Kai considered that a successful equipment briefing.

Kai & Parra Loph

Parra and Kai are almost perfectly designed to irritate each other.

Parra wakes up early.

Kai sleeps in.

Parra creates schedules.

Kai loses them.

Parra expects regular communication.

Kai turns his radio off because:

“The battery lasts longer.”

Parra believes infiltration requires preparation.

Kai believes preparation is useful if there is time:

after breakfast.

Somehow, his natural talent keeps producing results.

This makes Parra:

even angrier.

The Command Vox Axe vs. The Modular Infiltration Blade

Their new equipment has somehow made their personalities even more obvious.

Parra carries a weapon capable of amplifying her commands across a battlefield.

Kai carries a weapon specifically designed to:

avoid the battlefield.

Parra’s Command Vox Axe says:

“EVERYONE LISTEN.”

Kai’s Modular Infiltration Blade says:

“Nobody look over here.”

There may not be two pieces of Zenpai Association equipment that better summarize their owners.

Sleeping Through the Briefing

Kai has fallen asleep during:

Mission announcements.

Route planning.

Safety procedures.

Emergency drills.

Inventory briefings.

And Parra explaining why falling asleep during briefings is unacceptable.

That final one has happened more than once.

The introduction of the Command Vox Axe has made this habit:

significantly more dangerous.

Kai once woke up to Parra standing nearby holding the weapon.

He looked at the speaker assembly.

Looked at Parra.

Then quietly said:

“I’m awake.”

Parra:

“Good.”

Kai has described this as:

intimidation.

Parra describes it as:

successful communication.

Kai & Vivienne Vale

Vivienne has one request whenever Kai brings something into the Archives:

Tell her exactly where it came from.

Kai’s answers frequently include:

“Around.”

“A guy had it.”

“Long story.”

“Technically nobody was using it.”

Vivienne does not accept these as provenance records.

Kai insists historians are too picky.

Despite the frustration, Vivienne respects Kai’s ability to recognize unusual opportunities.

She simply wishes those opportunities came with:

receipts.

Kai finds receipts:

oppressive.

Vivienne & The Lucky Lockpick

Vivienne may be the person most irritated by Kai’s insistence that the Lucky Lockpick actually influences the Modular Infiltration Blade.

She has examined it.

It is:

old,

rusty,

ordinary,

and by every measurable standard...

a lockpick.

Kai insists she is missing:

the important part.

Vivienne:

“What important part?”

Kai:

“Luck.”

Vivienne:

“Luck is not a measurable property of the tool.”

Kai:

“Sounds unlucky.”

Vivienne stopped the conversation.

Kai & Akai

Akai loves Kai.

This concerns:

everyone.

Kai teaches Akai terrible habits.

Akai helps Kai find things.

Neither recognizes this relationship as a problem.

Kai once taught her that unattended snacks were:

“community property.”

Parra spent the next week correcting this.

Akai still sides with Kai.

Their combined ability to discover objects nobody authorized them to have makes them one of the Association’s:

least supervised pairings.

Akai & The Modular Infiltration Blade

Akai became interested in the blade almost immediately.

Not because it is sharp.

Because it has:

red lights,

moving components,

a cable,

hidden mechanisms,

and a tiny rusty object inside the handle.

Akai spent several minutes staring through the Lucky Lockpick compartment.

Then looked at Kai.

Then looked back at the lockpick.

Kai:

“Lucky.”

Akai immediately accepted this explanation.

Vivienne was horrified.

Kai finally had someone on his side.

The Bad Influence Duo

When Kai and Akai become unusually quiet...

someone usually checks on them.

Immediately.

Because there are two possibilities.

Either:

they are asleep.

Or:

something is being borrowed.

The second possibility is considerably more common.

Kai has repeatedly attempted to explain that Akai is simply:

learning procurement.

Parra has repeatedly explained that:

she is a fox spirit.

Kai sees no conflict between these statements.

His Philosophy

Kai’s worldview is simple.

Why pay full price?

Why use the front door?

Why fight someone you can convince?

Why buy something you can borrow?

Why break a lock when you can pick it?

Why carry five tools when one Modular Infiltration Blade can do the job?

Why wake up at 7:00 when the mission starts at 9:00?

Parra has answers to:

all of these questions.

Kai does not listen.

What Kai Loves

Kai is happiest around:

Free food

Discounts

Coupons

Unlocked doors

Expensive things sold cheaply

Sleeping late

Negotiating

Winning arguments

Borrowing things

Finding alternate entrances

Using the Modular Infiltration Blade to avoid doing something manually

Someone else picking up the tab

Especially:

that last one.

What Kai Hates

Kai has very little tolerance for:

Full price

Entry fees

Early mornings

Fixed prices

Expensive parking

People who refuse to negotiate

Being asked for receipts

Returning borrowed items before he is finished borrowing them

Security systems with no obvious bypass

People touching the Lucky Lockpick without asking

And:

“No substitutions.”

He considers that phrase unnecessarily hostile.

More Than a Cheapskate

For all the jokes surrounding him...

Kai is extremely useful when Zenpai Association needs someone who can:

think differently.

He sees routes other people miss.

Negotiates deals others would not attempt.

Finds opportunities inside problems.

Gets into places that should be inaccessible.

Gets out of places where leaving should be even harder.

And can turn situations that should end badly into stories everyone laughs about later.

Usually.

Kai may be:

messy,

lazy,

unreliable with money,

terrible at paying for dates,

and suspiciously comfortable with the phrase:

“nobody saw me.”

But when Zenpai Association needs someone who can slip through the cracks...

The Opportunist usually finds a way.

More Than a Lockpick

The Lucky Lockpick once represented almost everything Kai needed.

A simple tool.

A good hand.

A little patience.

And enough confidence to believe there was always another way inside.

The Modular Infiltration Blade does not replace that philosophy.

It expands it.

The weapon gives Kai:

more options,

more protection,

more ways to bypass obstacles,

and a way to defend himself when talking no longer works.

But at the center of all that advanced equipment...

inside the handle...

still sits the rusty Lucky Lockpick.

The same tool Kai trusted before Zenpai Association ever knew his name.

He could replace it.

He will not.

Because Kai En may embrace:

new opportunities.

New equipment.

New worlds.

But when something has proven useful...

he sees no reason to:

pay for another one.

The Opportunist of Zenpai Association

Akai follows curiosity.

Sienna chases the prize.

Vivienne preserves the story.

Parra controls the operation.

And Kai?

Kai looks for:

the shortcut.

Preferably one with free parking.

He does not always follow the rules.

He definitely does not always follow the budget.

And if something goes missing while he is nearby...

that is probably worth investigating.

Just do not expect him to admit anything.

Now, when Kai approaches a locked door, he has more than a rusty lockpick.

A black-and-silver blade rests within reach.

Red neon circuitry glows along its frame.

The Bypass Line waits inside the handle.

The modular systems activate.

And behind a protected window...

the old Lucky Lockpick remains exactly where Kai wanted it.

He studies the door.

Studies the security.

Studies the people nearby.

Then smiles.

Because to everyone else...

it looks locked.

To Kai?

It looks like:

an opportunity.

After all:

“If no one is watching, then no one will notice...”
